Opening Day!

Opening day for the new Amigos Veterinarios clinic was a big success. Even though many part-time residents have already left the area, a steady stream of animals kept the doctors busy throughout the day.

Drs. Jorge Bravo, Rene de la Garza and Gabriel Silva along with two volunteers from Amigos de Animales were on hand to staff the clinic. The vets will later rotate through the Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule. This made for a very crowded reception room but everyone was happy with the level of care. Margarita Partridge from the Cabo Humane Society showed her support with a visit and the donation of a microwave oven.

Before the clinic was even officially open, the doctors were off to see the first patient of the day, a horse with a broken hoof. They examined the horse and supplied anti-biotics and pain relief. A hoof specialist will be coming soon to repair the broken the hoof.

The rest of the day's clients were all canine. A health certificate was issued for Max, a thorough consult given on ole Hap who is suffering from joint pain, P.K. was treated for mange, and Sophie got a trim. Lots of ticks were removed and Frontline applied.

Dr. Gabriel Silva brought in a dog that he had helped at his practice in San Jose. He had performed surgery on both of Espiritu's back legs, which had been broken when he was hit by a car. The owner picked up the dog and received instructions for his care until next week when Gabriel will do a follow-up consultation.

There were no surgeries but if you want to have your pet spayed/neutered, simply bring them in first thing in the morning. Remember not to provide any food or water after 8pm the night before and if possible, bring your pet in a carrier.

Some of the medications prescribed were on hand at the clinic or available from the local farmacia but others, including special food for dogs with joint disease, will be brought back when the doctors return on Wednesday.

Basic trimming was performed on a couple dogs that had recently been bathed. Unfortunately, some dogs in need of more serious grooming services will have to come back in 4 weeks when we hope to have the outdoor grooming area completed. It looks like this will be a popular service

here at the clinic!

While we hope grooming, vaccinations, spay/neuter and other basic pet needs will keep the doctors busy, we are all relieved to have improved access to experienced and caring veterinarians when emergencies arise.

Amigos is a non-profit organization and the clinic has been brought about through the fund raising efforts of our volunteers and generous donations from caring individuals.
